Sample Commentary on Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13

The day of the LORD was originally a way of referring to Israelite celebrations of the freedom and protection God had given them. The prophet Amos turned the phrase into a warning that God would judge and punish people for their idolatry and injustice. Zephaniah goes further: not only people but the whole earth is subjected to God’s punishment.
